2011 MLB Roster Callups: D-Backs Trevor Bauer May Get Call, but Not for Playoffs

When UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the third overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft, his talent was considered so special that were was some thought that Bauer could end up on the D-Backs roster in September.

While that could still happen, it appears that Bauer will not be called up in time to qualify for a postseason roster spot.

Phoenix sports radio talk show host Jason Gambadoro reported on his Twitter account that the Diamondbacks will not call up Bauer prior to Sept. 1, meaning that he will not be eligible to be included on the postseason roster for the D-Backs, should they make it that far.

However, it doesn't mean that Bauer won't be called up at all sometime in September. Indeed, Bauer has impressed at both Advanced Single-A and Double-A ball thus far. In six starts, three at each level, Bauer has posted an impressive 2.62 ERA, with 40 strikeouts in 24 innings, and an equally outstanding strikeout-to walk ratio of 4.44.

Between Bauer's college innings at UCLA and his innings pitched thus far in the D-Backs organization, management is obviously wary of extending Bauer so early in his professional career. While he certainly could provide help, it makes no sense at this point to risk the future for the present.

So, while Bauer could certainly be seen at Chase Field in the next month, he won't be seen again after that until spring training next season. At that time, Bauer very well could be seen quite a bit at Chase Field for some time to come.
