Cam Newton: Why Game vs Saints Proves Rookie QB Best of Last Decade

Cam Newton continues to prove he deserved to be the No. 1 overall selection in the 2011 NFL draft. He has been nothing but spectacular, while helping the Panthers play competitive football.  Newton is well on his way to being the best rookie quarterback in the past decade.

The quarterback position is by far the most important player on the field. He touches the ball on every offensive play, and is responsible for getting the ball to the playmakers. A quarterback needs to physically gifted, but equally smart.

Rookie quarterbacks often struggle adjusting to the NFL, and not because of their physical abilities. Learning a new and complicated offensive system takes time. Many college offenses do not run a pro style system, meaning rookie quarterbacks need to start from the ground.

Newton was in this situation, as he ran a very unique pistol oriented offense. Auburn's offensive attack relied very heavily on Cam Newton's ability to run. He was rarely asked read the defense and work through his progressions.

It takes a special type of football player to be able to make the adjustments asked of Newton. He has come into the league needing to learn and develop. Newton starting right away put more pressure on him to be mentally ready.

Newton has quickly pick up the offense, while also putting up huge numbers. He opened the season with back to back 400 yard passing days. These stats are more impressive because many felt that Newton would struggle throwing the football. However, he has done nothing but excelled in the passing game.

He is completing close to 60 percent of his passes, a stat that will only improve with experience.

Today, Newton has the Panthers playing a great game against the New Orleans Saints. The Saints defensive coordinator Greg Williams loves to bring pressure. He is know for his ability to design confusing and exotic blitzes.

Newton has been able to move the football against the Saints. He has thrown one interception, but for the most part has taken care of the football. Newton's charisma and excitement has infected the entire Carolina Panthers football team.
